TODAY’S POST IS THE THIRD INSTALMENT OF MY ‘GET TO KNOW’ SERIES ON HPH, WHERE I CHAT TO INDEPENDENT PLANT SELLERS TO GET TO KNOW THEM (AND THEIR BUSINESSES) A LITTLE BETTER.
I THINK IT IS FAIR TO SAY THAT AS HOUSEPLANT COLLECTIONS GROW AND INTERESTS GET FUELLED, MANY PLANT ENTHUSIASTS TEND TO LOOK FOR MORE SPECIALISED SELLERS TO FIND THE PLANTS THAT THEY DESIRE. LARGE CHAINED GARDEN CENTRES AND SUPERMARKETS IN PARTICULAR, GET QUITE A BAD REPUTATION FOR PLANT CARE, SO BUYING DIRECTLY FROM A SELLER WHO LOVES PLANTS AS MUCH AS YOU IS A GOOD MOVE.
TODAY I AM INVITING YOU TO ‘GET TO KNOW: FOLIA PLANTING’. FOLIA PLANTING IS A NEW VENTURE RUN BY LOUISE GILL, DELIVERING PLANTS IN CHELTENHAM AND SURROUNDING AREAS, UK.
🌿 COULD YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT HOW YOU GOT INTO PLANTS AND WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO START UP FOLIA PLANTING?
I’ve always been into plants and planting styles, finding myself drawn to architectural styles. I completed a professional planting design course back in 2016 and this ignited things even further. I started FOLIA planting officially in November 2017 so it’s very new but really exciting. I started selling indoor plants as I found myself struggling to find anywhere that sold quality houseplants. I really enjoy advising people on which plants works in which place and how to look after them. It’s great to see people enjoy their plants and develop their indoor jungle!
🌿 WHAT’S THE OLDEST PLANT IN YOUR PERSONAL COLLECTION?
I have an old Dracaena which must be about 20 years old, it has special memories as a dear friend bought it for me.
🌿 COULD YOU SHARE SOME OF YOUR PLANT FAVOURITES?
There’s so many!!!! Classic all time favourites are Nephrolepis exaltata, the Boston Fern is one of the most beautiful classic houseplants in my opinion. I have a lot of love for Sansevieria, most varieties and also Ficus Robusta and Philodendron Xanadu.
🌿 HOW MANY PLANTS DO YOU CURRENTLY HAVE AT HOME?
Around 100-150, some of these are for sale but my collection is changing constantly which is great. There are around 30 in my personal collection and it’s growing all of the time! I also like to try and understand all of the plants I sell so I can give the best advice.
🌿 WHAT’S YOUR TOP FIVE WISHLIST?
My current wish list, this does change quite a lot!!!
- Cycas revoluta – I sold one of these recently and wish I’d kept it!
- Strelitzia reginae – Bird of Paradise
- Anthurium veitchii (a.k.a. king anthurium)
- I’m always a sucker for any large palms that I can get my hands on, these add instant drama. I’m just waiting on delivery on a 2m high Washingtonia palm, I intend to keep it outside in the summer and inside in the winter
- Variegated Monstera Deliciosa would be nice too
🌿 WHAT PLANT WOULD YOU RECOMMEND TO A PLANT NEWBIE?
There’s lots and lots but the classic Snake Plant or a Haworthia are always a good start.
🌿 WHAT PLANT/S DO YOU FIND THE MOST DIFFICULT TO LOOK AFTER?
I find begonias and some calathea quite fussy.
🌿 …AND WHAT’S THE MOST EASY GOING PLANT FOR YOU?
Epipremnum aureum are fantastic plants, a real favourite for me.
🌿 COULD YOU SHARE YOUR BEST PLANT CARE TIP?
Do your research and understand your plant before you buy or get some advice. Right plant, Right place every time! Also, be realistic about the amount of time you have to look after them.
🌿 HAVE YOU GOT ANY INTERESTING PLANT STORIES?
I’m currently working on a really exciting project for a local craft brewery, we’re installing indoor plants in an industrial setting, it’s amazing to see the difference the planting will make to the space. Since renovating part of our house at the end of last year my plants have taken centre stage in my hallway, my late grandmothers mid-century shelving unit has taken pride of place and been the perfect partner to my plant obsession.
🌿 ANYTHING ELSE TO ADD? WHAT ARE YOUR SOCIAL LINKS?
Since setting up my business in November I’ve found Instagram to be a huge catalyst for me. There’s a great plant community to be found and it’s amazing to be part of it. I’m also loving the difference that plants make to people’s homes and businesses and it’s great to see people expanding their plant family! I’m also a strong believer that plants do make you happy, physically and emotionally, and are really good to have around.
I recently launched my online store, I’m currently offering local delivery in Cheltenham and surrounding areas. I also offer a plant consultation service and visit homes and businesses.
If you have any requests for independent plant shops or sellers you would like me to feature on this ‘GET TO KNOW…’ series, please send me a DM on Instagram HERE
