How I stop my Tradescantia fluminensis tricolour from looking like a crispy mess

Pink plants are perpetually popular + this tradescantia is no exception. I’ve had this houseplant for a couple of years but every time winter has come around, it’s been a bit of ‘plant care-experiment time’ with keeping this Tradescantia fluminensis tricolour happy. The first thing to say is that this is a beautiful plant. It’s a…

Getting ficus plants to branch

Today I wanted to share a process that is easy to do but one that can be a bit daunting… cutting the top off ficus plants. It’s funny because I know I will go at my outdoor balcony plants with a snips way more readily than my houseplants! Pruning just seems an inherent part of…

Marantaceae care guide

Just thought I’d share the link on here to a blog post I wrote for Root Houseplants about Marantaceae care… if you have a Maranta, Calathea, Stromanthe or Ctenanthe, you can have a read of it HERE! Hope it’s helpful!  — — Laura

Care + repotting of senecio rowleyanus; aka string of pearls

I love witnessing the ebbs and flows in plant popularity, both in the shop and on instagram too. I can usually tell when a plant has got a lot of hype around it, or if it has ‘hit the mainstream’ when my non-planty friends (yes have tried to convert them, but no it hasn’t worked…

How to avoid brown tips on houseplants

I have had my Stromanthe sanguinea triostar for a few years now, and it’s one of those plants that has really blossomed into something of a statement piece in my houseplant collection. As part of the Marantaceae family it is definitely the easier-going relative in my experience, and I often get questions about how to…

The cause of white speckles on jade plants (+ what to do)

As far as succulents go, jade/money plants/crassulas are perhaps some of the most ‘classic‘ plants in this category. My apartment doesn’t really have the best conditions for succulents so my houseplant collection leans more towards the leafy side of things, with my succulent collection taking up a good proportion of desk in my south facing…

Why are my leaves turning yellow?

A question, or rather an exclamation, I hear quite a bit in the plant shop is ‘my plant has leaves that are turning yellow, help! What does this mean?!’ So I thought I’d put some of the possible causes in a little post to help as it’s often a process of elimination to determine the…

How to mount and care for a staghorn fern

For the last 9 months I’ve been knocking my head every time I get into the shower on my staghorn fern, which has been enjoying the humidity of bathroom life. I’ve been keeping it in its nursery pot but knew that I’d eventually want to divide and mount it for it to thrive. So over […]

Aglaonema care guide / Ag-LEON-ema (the plant from one of my favourite films)

The other night I re-watched one of my favourite films; LEON by Luc Besson from 1994. It’s about a hitman played by the utterly cool Jean Reno and where Natalie Portman made her acting debut at the age of 13. You’re probably thinking for a minute that you’ve stumbled across the wrong website, but hang on,…

Avocado growing: Why everyone should grow an avocado plant

Today, I wanted to share a really rewarding growing experience that has taken me a little by surprise. Over the last year I’ve eaten many avocados; in guacamole, on toast, blended to make healthy chocolate mousse (sounds strange but is yummy!)… and as a result, have had lots of pits rolling around my kitchen counter.…

There’s a nanouk propagation update coming soon — I conducted a little plant experiment which I will put together in a post next week 😊 — I just need the sun to come back out so that I can shoot the update images! ☀️ 💕
Even though it’s got a bit spindly over winter, I love the way my begonia looks like a little leaning, polka dot sculpture 🪴 + there is also the cutest new growth popping up at the base (pic on stories)! After yesterdays post, a few of you wanted to have a better look at my #begoniamaculatawightii — so here it is! I propagated this in water + in a few weeks I will have a look at the roots to see if it needs repotting. Happy #begoniamonday ! ✨🌼
Today’s blogpost is all about low light tolerant houseplants, of which, these are a few… I couldn’t fit them all into the shot!
A closer look at my big peperomia hope — I’ve grown this from a small plant + it really enjoys this specific position — 1 metre away from a south-east window! This time of year I water it around once a month from the bottom using a drip tray + it’s been doing ok considering the low temperatures here. I’ve found that giving the top of the pot adequate light has really helped to keep my plant looking full — this winter I’ve also used a grow light on it which seems to have helped it along. 💚
The cutest iridescent leaf ☀️ 🍃✨#monsteramonday
Really can’t wait to go thrifting again. If you’ve been at HPH at while, or know me IRL you’ll know I love interior decor as much as houseplants! It’s been a weird year, being in a temporary place + not being able to express my style when my living space often feels like a houseplant storage area(!), but this photo reminds me of all the fun that goes into sourcing furniture pieces that have been in my collection for a long time now... 🪑🪴✨
I am a big fan of these trailing plants together — I think the leaves really complement each other! 💕🍃
I’ve had my RT for nearly a year now + in all honesty, it’s grown so well with quite a lot of neglect. Even though I put a U-shaped bamboo support in the pot, I have been enjoying just letting it do it’s thing — and I quite like it a little wild like this! ☺️🍃
